Credibility, Community, Confidence and CLIENTS!

I have decided the month of November is Coach appreciation month! Everyday I will connect with my gratitude on the difference the coaching profession has made in my life. This was inspired by the opportunity to participate in the International Coach Federation Credential (ICF) Legacy contest. I submitted a 3 minute video on how being associated with the ICF has in so many positive ways, impacted my career (you can see the video below). In today’s article, my hope is that I inspire you to make your professional growth and certification journey a priority as you manifest your entrepreneurial dreams!

ICF

And one more thing, please vote for me - the winner of The Credential Legacy Contest’s grand prize is a lifetime of free ICF Credential renewal applications, which would be a nice addition to this already rewarding journey :) .

Feature Article: Credibility, Community, Confidence…and CLIENTS!

There’s just no substitute for top-notch training, or the instant credibility it gives you! (And yes, I am speaking from experience, lots of it!)I’m proud to say, I’ve been an active member the International Coach Federation since its earliest days. I even co-founded our local ICF Chapter in Vancouver, BC. In 1988, I became the first Master Certified Coach (MCC) in Canada.I cannot say enough about the positive impact that the ICF has on the coaching industry. With world-class training and certification programs, it upholds a standard of quality and ethics that continues to impress and inspire me.

So, when I heard about the ICF “Credential Legacy” campaign, I jumped at the chance to speak my mind and tell other coaches about the impact of my ICF credentials – on me, my business and my ability to make an impact in the world. As the Director of Entrepreneurship at Erickson College International Business Center, it’s my job to help coaches create and grow a profitable coaching practice. I know what works – so believe me when I tell you that a successful business includes rock-solid credentials.Whether you have credentials or not (yet!), I encourage you to click the video image below to hear what I have to say about this. It’s only 3 minutes, but the video offers value and insight – even for those outside of the coaching industry.

(And by the way… you’ll notice a “Vote for this Entry” box just under my smiling face on the voting page; please click on it! If there are people in your network who would benefit from my comments, please feel free to share the video with them via the Twitter and Facebook links provided in the Social Media Links section belowI appreciate you helping me get more votes! When it comes to marketing your business or making a strong first impression, credentials are pure rocket fuel. They make a powerful statement, one that says: “I’ve learned from the best and I know what I’m doing. You can trust me”. And the more advanced your credentials, the more value you have to offer – so the faster that trust develops. No matter what industry you specialize in, it pays to commit to ongoing education and professional development. So, what’s your next step?

Pricing Your Coaching Services – Where To Start?

price-tag2“I’m new at this, so I haven’t earned the right to charge much yet. I’ll aim for the low end of the market and hope that makes me more attractive to prospects. At least I’ll attract the bargain hunters and I can work my way up from there.”

This is what a new coach shared with me when he was determining his coaching fees. If you have had similar thoughts, I strongly encourage you to reconsider your perspective. When it comes to pricing your services, it’s natural and normal to feel the cold shadow of self-doubt creeping in but what if you were to consider your pricing strategy as a savvy entrepreneur and not through the fears and doubts of a budding entrepreneur? Where would you start?

There are many factors to consider when determining your coaching fees and to ensure that your most powerful self makes the decision, I encourage you to start with the end in mind!

Assess your financial goals.
It goes without saying (but I’m going to say it anyway) that your business exists to generate profits. It’s not a hobby or a non-profit organization it’s your personal money machine! Yes, it’s also a way to contribute to the world and exercise your natural talents. However, those considerations aside, your business needs to generate a certain level of financial results in order to stay viable and support your desired lifestyle.

money-pricing

So, before you even begin to think about products and pricing, you have to get clear on your financial goals. What is your business trying to achieve? Start with a good long look at your current lifestyle.

  • Do you want to work full time or part time?
  • Will you work from home or rent an office?
  • Are you going to be the sole breadwinner in your household or will you share that responsibility?

How much *net* revenue do you need to generate in order to support your vision of your life? Consider this question on both an annual and monthly basis. Don’t be vague, take the time to really know your numbers.

Massage your numbers until you arrive at a realistic understanding of how much your business needs to generate each month. Now you have a solid starting point of how to price your coaching services.  For example, let’s say you determined that you need to generate $8,000 a month and you will work 30 hours a week. Now ask yourself; what do my coaching programs need to look like so I can coach within these hours and generate the revenue I need to generate?  From here we can determine how to structure your business and set your prices.

Embrace the mindset of a successful entrepreneur, start with the end in mind and begin creating a business that will serve the life you want!

Passion into Profit Coaches Challenge: Do the above exercise and determine your monthly and yearly revenue goals and then begin to break down your coaching fees.

Meet, Embrace And Design Your Business Around Your Genius!

What if you spent 80 percent of your business hours ONLY doing what you love?

What if ALL your marketing activities were fun, energizing and effortless?

If I told you this was possible would you believe me? Well I hope you do, because it is!

genius

Here is how you can make that vision true for you.

Every single person on the planet has a unique set of talents and gifts. (I know you coach your clients on this every day, now it is time to focus on you and your gifts, your personal fulfillment as an entrepreneur depends on it!). These are the things that come easy to you and complement your personality. You are good at them, and naturally, you love to do them.

For example, some people are extroverted and enjoy engaging those around them in meaningful conversations. Others are introverted and they have an impressive skill set when it comes to processing information and putting their thoughts on paper.

Sometimes, these abilities feel so natural that we assume everyone can do these things. But that simply isn’t true. These traits are gifts, specially developed aspects of your personality, and they form the basis of your unique ability to contribute in the world.

It is vitally important that you discover, explore and leverage your unique set of natural abilities. Why? Because these are the traits that will:

  1. Attract your ideal clients and turn them into raving fans.
  2. Keep you focused and energized, not only in the moment but also in the long term.
  3. And, they will help you market and run your business in a way that feels fun and effortless.

Give yourself the gift of thoroughly investigating what it is that you are both great at and love doing (your attractive abilities).

Begin by asking yourself these four critical questions.

  1. Which business activities energize you, both during and after you do them?
  2. Which business activities make time fly?
  3. Think of a time when you were successful as a professional. What activities were you doing?
  4. What activities do other people compliment your performance on (and you feel surprised because you thought everyone was good at it)?

Passion Into Profit Challenge: Open your mind to the possibility that you are sitting on a goldmine, get excited about the process of discovering your hidden gems and tap into your primal source of energy and let your genius shine as you build your business.

The Power of Planning

“Discipline is doing the things you do not necessarily want to do but you know it will create the results you want to create”

~ Teresia LaRocque MCC

planning-smaller

Before we get into how to plan effectively, I need to level with you: planning requires discipline – it is not always easy!  You have to make it a priority, and you have to take it seriously. If you want it to work for you, you have to schedule time to plan, and not just every now and then – consistently. Make it a habit and learn to live by it. As a coach to business owners, and as an entrepreneur myself, i have learned it is the most supportive habit you could possibly adopt.

Dedicating time, on a regular basis, to step back and think about what you want and need, and what you have to do in order to achieve your goals and commitments it the difference between being a frantic worker bee to the CEO of your business.

Planning always starts with the end in mind – looking at the results (e.g. revenue) you want to create, and figuring out what you need to do to make that happen. It’s a strategic process of starting with the big picture and working your way down to specific, measurable, manageable action steps – one question at a time.

  • What do I want to achieve?
  • What are the steps it will take to achieve that?
  • What must get done in order to accomplish each step?
  • When will I do each of those things?
  • What resources and support will help me accomplish those steps?

In business, we plan around results and profits. Looking at your priorities, you have to keep asking yourself: what is most profitable? What is most effective? What is most impactful?

Then you break these pieces down into action steps. What do you need to do in order to follow through and move ahead on these objectives?  Make a list of leads and action steps, and schedule them on your calendar. Most importantly, make the internal commitment to following through on them.

At the end of the day, it’s very simple: If your business is not growing at the rate that you want, or generating the profit that you desire, step back and invest more time in planning to ensure you are as efficient and productive as possible.

Passion Into Profit Coach Challenge: Decide when and how often you will block out time for planning.

Stop The Chaos – A Colorful Time Management Tip!

In today’s article, I share some key time management principals. As we commit to living a full life and operating a successful business the experience of pure balance may never be a reality but knowing on a daily basis that our business is serving our ideal life rather than being a servant to our business is what I call effective time management may these principals have you back in the driver seat and creating the life you desire!

Are you ready to take your time management and priorities to a whole new level? Customized business breakthrough coaching may be the next step for you. See below for the special offer to support you to make this your most profitable summer yet.

Feature Article: Stop the Chaos – A Colorful Time Management Tip!

As as a self employed professional you juggle many balls, wear many different hats and are constantly trying to balance personal and professional priorities.

Implement these tips and ensure your business is serving a great life rather then feeling like a servant to your business.

Firstly, know your priorities and then commit to live by them.

What are your personal priorities? These are the first things you will put in your calendar. When life is busy, it is easy to give up the personal activities that give you joy, re-energize you or that are at the top of your values list. Exercise, monthly lunch date with your close circle of friends, three-day weekends, family days, are these part of your best life vision?

As an entrepreneur you have the opportunity to design your life exactly how you want to – so let’s take advantage of that and block in your personal priorities first.

Ok, now that you have your ideal life blocked in let’s get down to building and sustaining a successful business. In order to maintain your momentum, grow your business and have it be as balanced as possible, you will need to focus on spending time in each of these four key areas and block them into your calendar.

Money Making Marketing Activities

This includes any activity or action that creates profit for your business and contributes to the bottom line. Examples: networking, sales or business presentations, generating referrals, following up with leads or prospects, presentations, delivering your service etc.

Here is the key – to build a profitable business 60% of your business hours must be spent on money making activities. Yes, 60% of your time!

Preparation Activities

This includes activities that you need to do to prepare or follow up on your money making activities. For example, if one of your money-making activities is doing presentations, then preparation activities could include making contacts to book a presentation and preparing your speech. Preparation activities also include taking time to evaluate what is working in your business, where you need to make changes, and strategize new ideas to grow your business. 20% of your business hours should be spent on preparation activities.

Lets add some fun and colour to our blocking principal - colour code your activities and be intentional on how you spend your time.

Lets add some fun and colour to our blocking principal – colour code your activities and be intentional on how you spend your time.

Super Service Activities

These are any activities that add extra value to your clients or team. Think “under promise/over deliver”. Perhaps you offer a bonus product or service, hold a client appreciation night or take your business team out for lunch.

Administrative Activities

As an owner of a business, we all have administrative activities to do. The key is to ensure that less than 10% of our time is spent in this area. If you are spending more than 10% of your business hours on admin activities, it is time to delegate!

Getting clear of your priorities, blocking them in your calendar, adding a little colour to your week can make the difference of being a servant to your business verses your business serving a great life.

Passion into Profit Coaches Challenge: Take time to get clear of your personal and business priorities and make it a habit to block time for the above 5 areas into your calendar.

Feature Article

If we had a hidden camera to spy on the lives of 10 entrepreneurs it is a good chance  most of them would exhaust us just by watching their day. The thing is, most entrepreneurs get stuck in a mode of reacting to things – catching and dealing with whatever comes up. The phone rings, they answer it. An email comes in, they respond immediately. A co-worker has a problem, they’re on it.

While this may seem to be a good idea in the moment, at the end of the day they feel scattered and unproductive. Can you relate?

And when this continues over time, profits, motivation and quality of life suffer a great deal. When people don’t see results, we tend to lose interest. Loss of enthusiasm eventually leads to total burnout, both personally and professionally.

The only way out of this situation is to make the decision to be deliberate with your time and attention. No more reacting to whatever comes your way! It’s time to set up your day in a way that ensures that the most important things get done – always. And the best way to get yourself into this mode is to do some planning.

Michael Gerber, renowned author of The E-Myth, talks about working ON the business, not just IN it… and that’s exactly what we’re telling you to do. Not once, not periodically – habitually. This is a mission-critical skill for ongoing business success.

Here are some business success habits to make a part of your life:

1. Annually:
Take a day or two to celebrate the past year’s successes, review the lessons, and define your big-picture goals for the coming year. Consider adopting a theme for the coming year, as well as a profit goal. You may want to include your mentors, colleagues or mastermind group in this process – they undoubtedly have some valuable insights, observations and ideas to offer.
Decide and clarify the underlining theme for your business each year. For example:
  • New clients
  • Increased exposure
  • New projects
  • Balance in your life

2. Quarterly planning:

Break down your big-picture goals into 4 achievable parts and establish quarterly goals that will support your annual goals. Each quarter, revisit your goals and assess your progress, then set or adjust your goals for the coming quarter.

3. Monthly: Identify monthly priority projects.
  • Block time in your calendar to work on these activities.
  • Use your debrief tool at the end of each month to measure your progress, and then identify the top 3 to 5 priorities for the next month.
  • Loosely plan out how you expect the weeks to unfold, based upon your monthly priorities.
  • Block into your schedule the most important activities first, both personally and professionally.
4. Weekly Planning
  • Debrief your past week to measure your progress, and then identify your top 3 to 5 priorities for the following week.
  • Make adjustments to your previous plans as needed, to allow for the changes or new opportunities that will inevitably occur each week.
5. Daily Planning
  • Develop the habit of taking 10 minutes at the end of each day to summarize (and track) your progress that day, and to plan your activities for the next day. This includes meetings, calls and other To Do’s.
  • Consult your calendar for your scheduled appointments.
  • Prioritize your To Do’s using A’s (must do today) and B’s (everything else).
  • Make sure that everything you plan to accomplish in a day is listed in one place.
  • Highlight or check off your activities throughout the day as you do them. This will make it easier to measure your results at the end of each day for the activities you are tracking.

Only Do What You Love – It Is Your Key to Successful Entrepreneurship

Imagine a cup that represents your internal energy. When your cup is full, even overflowing at times, you feel confident and focused; you’re in the zone.  You have so much to give to your clients, your business and your circle of influence.

Now imagine your cup springing a leak. As the energy slowly drains out, you struggle to keep it full. It gets harder and harder to pour energy into your business and the people around you. You feel much less vibrant, and you enjoy your activities less. Things become a struggle when there is less energy to go around.

This cup represents not only your energy but your ability to achieve success. It’s not just imaginary; it is a very real part of your life as an entrepreneur. So, if you want to be successful, you have to ask yourself:

  1. How do I need to design my business so that my cup stays full?
  2. How can I market my business in a way that keeps me energetic and passionate?

These are very important questions, because in the coaching industry, we’re not selling a product; we are marketing ourselves. It’s personal, very personal. We’re asking people to invest in us. This can be an intimidating thing to do. It’s a high-stakes proposition, and it can bring out our inner gremlins – self-doubt and insecurities. As we go about building our business and coaching others, we want to be engaged in activities that feel natural and effortless, so our inner light can shine and people can experience our brilliance, not our fears.

Passion into Profit Coaching Challenge: Embrace the standard that 80% of your time as a coach in business you will be doing what you love and find a way to let go of or delegate the rest! Your success depends on it.

PS. I would love to hear from you! Do you feel that your Entrepreneurial cup is full? What can you do today in your business to ensure your marketing your business in a fun and effortless way? Please share with us on Facebook.

How to Make Building Your Coaching Business Seem Fun and Effortless

Building a coaching business can feel daunting, especially if the entrepreneurial world is new to you or you don’t particularly like the whole marketing conversation. But let it be known, you do not have to do the hard driving, grit your teeth action to build a profitable business.

If I told you it was possible to market your business through activities that you found fun, energizing and effortless, would you believe me?  I’m going to share with you how to make that vision true for you.

Building a successful business is like building a skyscraper, you need a solid foundation to support a six-figure business. But beyond a solid foundation to support it, you need a consistent source of energy to keep doing the activities you need to do to get the results you desire.

What is this source of energy? We’re talking about marketing. Not flash-in-the-pan marketing… sustainable marketing. And if you want it to be sustainable, it has to be easy. It has to fit with your natural abilities – the things you are good at and enjoy doing. I call these your attractive abilities – your key to successful entrepreneurship.

Every single person on the planet has a unique set of talents and gifts. These are the things that come easy to you and complement your personality. You are good at them, and naturally, you love to do them.

For example, some people are extroverted and enjoy engaging those around them in meaningful conversations, like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates.

Others are introverted and they have an impressive skill set when it comes to processing information and putting their thoughts on paper. Example could be leaders such as Warren Buffett or Steven Spielberg.

Sometimes, these abilities feel so natural that we assume everyone can do these things. But that simply isn’t true. These traits are gifts, specially developed aspects of your personality, and they form the basis of your unique ability to contribute in the world.

Give yourself a chance to thoroughly investigate what it is that you are both great at and love doing. Begin by asking yourself these four critical questions.

  1. Which business activities energize you, both during and after you do them?
  2. Which business activities make time fly?
  3. Think of a time when you were successful as a professional. What activities were you doing?
  4. What activities do other people complement your performance on (and you feel surprised because you thought everyone was good at it)?

Passion into Profit Coaching Challenge: Decide today to align your marketing activities with things you love to do and what you are great at and embrace the effortless way of being a coach in business.

PS. I would love to hear from you! Are you clear on your Attractive Abilities?  What are you doing to build your business that you love to do?  Please share with us on Facebook.

Values – The Foundation of Living a Life You Love! Part 2

We are almost at the end of the first month of the year. A great time to check in and ask yourself how is this year shaping up so far?  At the beginning of the month I shared a concept that I am very passionate about, one that has transformed the quality of my life and the life of many of my clients, and that is living a life aligned with your values.  When we are engaged in activities that are MOST important to us, it increases our energy, our passion for life and pulls us toward creating the results we most desire in our life. I am grateful every day for a business that allows me to live my highest values and this month I celebrate an over the top inspirational evening with the most influential woman in the world OPRAH WINFREY!

Sharing the evening with great friends, being in the same room as one of my role models (OK,  it was a big room) and soaking in every word she said, was a night of living my highest values. I continue to ask myself how can I continue to increase my quality of life and fully step into my highest values on a daily basis and in today’s article I ask you the same question!

See below in our resource section we have extended the holiday price ( for 3 more days!) on our ebook on “A New Approach to Goal Setting” - a step by step self coaching guide on clarifying a living your life aligned with your values.

Feature Article: Foundation of Living a Life You Love! Part 2

Earlier this month, I introduced the concept of setting goals that reflect your true values – goals that inspire you to take action (instead of those you have to force yourself to achieve). Many of us have been conditioned to “goal set” to live a life we love. Goal setting is powerful but only sustainable and fulfilling if they are aligned with what we most value.

To help you get clear on your own personal values, I asked you to complete the following sentence:

“If I had plenty of free time and all the money I could ever want, then I would be free to _(action)_ and that would let me experience more _(value)_.

When you answer this question, you end up with a list of attributes that you value. (To review, examples include authority, adventure, connection, creativity, etc.)

Now you’re ready to set goals that support your values.

First, make a list of initial goals for this year. Consider the different areas of your life: relationships, career, finances, health, spirituality, recreation, etc. Take a few minutes and brainstorm all the goals you have in each area.

Now, take a close look at your goals and eliminate those that stem from something you feel you “should” or “have to” do. If it doesn’t light you up inside, cross it off your list. (Really – it’s okay!)

Next, compare your remaining goals with your list of values; can you find any goals that are aligned with a values?

I recently went through this process with one of my clients, Kim, an ambitious self-employed consultant. She was overwhelmed with goals and quickly losing interest in them. With a lot of encouragement, she eliminated all the “should” goals – effectively cutting her list in half. With a little more work, she identified her top 3:

  1. Lose 15 pounds
  2. Update her website
  3. Increase her bottom line by 30%

At first, Kim wasn’t very excited about these goals. Then we reviewed her values – health, expertise, and making a difference. She came to realize that her goals would help her experience exactly what was most important in her life. Losing weight would improve her health; updating the website would showcase her expertise; and increasing her bottom line would mean more clients, more work, and more impact in the world.

Once she made these connections, Kim was eager to take action. She was committed. Every day, she did some kind of exercise – walking, yoga, at least some stretching. And she wasn’t thinking about those 15 pounds… she was thinking about improving her health. Not only did her motivation go up, but her level of confidence and clarity increased. She knew she was living her life exactly the way she wanted to. Within months she made great progress toward all of her goals, but her focus was on living in alignment with her values. Her goals were looking after themselves.

When you narrow your focus – to live according to your values – you don’t have to set as many goals. Give yourself permission to let go of the “shoulds” and say yes to what you’re passionate about. These things will naturally lead you to a more engaging, fulfilling and easier life.

Create goals that are about the experience, not the result. What goals could help you experience more of what you value the most? For example, if you know you value contribution, how can you step out of your box to contribute more? Perhaps you could accept more leadership at work, or volunteer for a local charity. Create an outlet for your values, whatever they are. The benefits will ripple across all areas of your life.

We get so caught up in the responsibilities of day to day life that most of us lose touch with the things we love to engage in. Life does not need to be a struggle. Stop pushing yourself so hard, and take time to reconnect with your inspiration. Make a commitment to reorient your life around the things that energize you and nurture your soul. I promise, your quality of life will improve and you will naturally be pulled towards the results you want in your life.

  1. Eliminate any goals that reflect a “should.” Only keep those you truly want to achieve.
  2. Associate each goal with one of your core values.
  3. Decide what kind of action you need to take to honor those values and move closer to your goals.
  4. Get excited and get moving! You’ll make quick progress… I’m sure of it.

Online Marketing: First Step – Share your message!

The first goal of online marketing is to attract attention to yourself and your business by emphasizing the unique value you can deliver to a specific group of people.

Today, in the era of social media, this has never been easier. Whether you prefer to write, deliver speeches, connect through videos, create illustrations, or even just chat with people, the Big Four of Social Media will help you and your business gain exposure.

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. LinkedIn
  4. Youtube

By sharing your unique processes and expertise through the different online venues, your goal is to make people say, “I really enjoyed this (article, video, comment, blog post)! I want to check out the website and learn more about this (person, topic, solution).”

When people get to your site, they’ll be interested to learn more about you and see what else you have to offer them. They see your smiling face and read a little about “what’s in it for them.” They’ll spend some time reading your blog entries and/or watching your videos, absorbing the information and resources that you’ve posted to entice your ideal clients. Ideally, they learn something about you and your unique processes, and they get excited about learning more.

Passion into Profit Challenge: Determine your strategy to share your expertise through the big four of social media and make it a consistent marketing practice.

This is the first step in developing a relationship – consistently connecting with people and establishing credibility. When they get some value from this step, they will move on to the next step – investing in your services!

Be sure to join me on Feb 12th for a complimentary Explore Entrepreneurship Webinar where we will be exploring the power of claiming your niche. To learn more and to register please click here.
