Are you resisting letting go of the holidays season and fully getting back into the life of a growing entrepreneur?

As I self-coach myself to transition from a 2 1/2 week vacation (a wonderful Christmas with family in Ottawa where we embraced -20 degrees weather and fresh snow for a week!) and get back into the entrepreneurial lifestyle, I noticed a twinge of anxiety and put myself in the shoes of all of the fellow budding entrepreneurs I have had the honour to mentor. I shared a personal story with the participants of the Passion into Profit program and the Erickson Business Center community and I received a lot of “LIKES” and many comments, as it resonated with a lot of people. I thought I would share it with you, my valued TLC community, in hopes that it also supports you in experiencing the beginning of the year with more ease, inner fulfillment and knowing that it all happens the way it is suppose to.
The first 3 years of my business, without fail every January my body would shut down and I would be confined to my bed for at least 7 days. When I look back I realize the pressure I would put on myself to achieve, to produce results, to leveragethe opportunity that the beginning of a New Year could provide for a coach helping individuals set and achieve their goals. By the first week of January, I would have created an online marketing campaign to sell my New Approach to Goal Setting Ebook and I was in full blown action to fill a live workshop I delivered by the end of January on goal setting and have at least a dozen other “going public” commitments under my belt for the first quarter of the year. Yes I was motivated and very passionate about what I did but underlying that was also a huge dose of lack of self trust, a driving need to feel like I was significant and that I wouldsucceed as an entrepreneur.
I share this with you to assure you that if you are feeling anxious going into the new year or resisting taking your commitment to building your business to the next level, you are not alone.
As budding entrepreneurs, it is natural to put pressure on yourself, to have BIG goals, to have even bigger gremlins and perhaps the biggest gremlin of them all, “will I really make it as an entrepreneur”? (The relentless self doubt gremlin).
Eighteen years later, I begin the New Year very differently. Yes, there is still a twinge of anxiety but one that fuels me rather then landing me in bed for a week.
Here are the top three things I have learned:
A marathon approach to business is more successful and sustainable than running sprints.
Your success as an entrepreneur (who also lives a great life!) is directly related to your depth of self love! (Yes this one surprised me too
Listening to and dancing with the divine timing rather than forcing your timing is a lot more fulfilling and effortless.
This January, resolve to make your relationship with yourself a priority, set realistic goals that energize you and trust the divine timing of your life.
If this post resonated with you, take a deep breath, and repeat this affirmation “I trust the divine timing of my life and know that everything happens at the time and the way it’s supposed to”. Really breathe into it. Repeat it again, Ok one more time. Now don’t you feel better?
Remember, as a community of coaches on the journey of realizing our entrepreneurial dreams, we are in this together (oh yeah, that is another big learning I received “You can’t do this business building thing alone! Being vulnerable, asking for help and cultivating a world class support team is key in realizing your entrepreneurial dreams”).

This time of year, many of us begin to think about what we want to create, experience or accomplish in the New Year. Many people start the New Year with a heart full of good intentions and a list full of resolutions and/ or goals, but the sad truth is that fewer than half of those resolutions and goals will ever be met. Through my experience of being a coach and in the business of helping entrepreneurs set their goals and achieve them, I notice over and over again unless goals are based on what we truly value, they are fruitless and we often end up feeling self-defeated. This year, give up New Year’s resolutions and traditional goal setting and simply discover and embrace living a life aligned with your values.
In module 3, we learned the power of and importance of values. They are the things you do that you find very attractive; an emotional state that you feel is very important. When engaged in these activities, you feel most like yourself; in touch with who you are, glowing and life seems effortless. Values are the essence of who you are.
When you live a life aligned with your values you:
Know that when you set a goal you will feel fulfilled both when you achieve it and during the process!
Live life with ease and increased passion.
Have decision-making become effortless and inspiring.
Never question how you choose to spend your time or what opportunities to pursue.
Clarifying and then living your life in harmony with those values, provides an inspiration, an inner drive that keeps you moving. Imagine building your business from this place? Imagine everyday being engaged in activities that are aligned with what brings you great passion and fulfillment. In an instant, we go from “having to build a business” to “living a life we love”.
This holiday season give yourself the gift of reviewing or discovering your true values. Set a foundation not only for an extraordinary life but also a foundation for an effortless and fulfilling journey as an entrepreneur.

I wanted to take a moment and connect with you during this special time of year. The holiday season can be a season of many emotions, ranging from joy, gratitude, happiness and for some loss, sadness and loneliness. This year it is a very happy, joyful time for our family. My heart grows as I experience this holiday season through the eyes of my son Kenny, and experience special moments as a family. Today I am grateful and take nothing for granted. I am sharing this video message with you today, with the intention that whatever this holiday highlights for you that this ritual of giving yourself the gift of time will bring an inner strength, a deeper sense of gratitude, a new level of joy and fulfillment and an unwavering knowing that you can count on YOU.

During this time of year, many of us experience a variety of rituals, whether it’s taking time to put up a Christmas tree, special gatherings with your loved ones, going to festive events etc. I would like you to consider another ritual that could prove to be one of the most important rituals you do and that is giving yourself the gift of time. When I talk about the gift of time, what I’m really talking about is taking the time to step back and look at your life. As an entrepreneur, you are your business, how you feel, the clarity you have, the focus you have makes the difference in creating what you really want in your life.
You will see below, I am giving you access to a template (a series of questions) to work through review and reflect on 2012. We’re living this life, let’s embrace it, let’s get connected with the richness and wealth of knowledge our life journey has to share. Who have you become over the year? How did you grow? What people made a difference in your life? What insights did you get? Then from that reflection and acknowledgement of what happened in 2012, you can begin to build on that strong foundation for what you want in 2013. One of the creations that I am most proud of is an ebook that I wrote in the beginning of my career. It’s almost 20 years old and it’s timeless and it’s all about a new approach to goal setting.

A critical first step when starting a service based business is to get clear on your niche. Deciding on a viable niche will leverage immediate and long term efforts in building a profitable and sustainable business.

Coaches and self-employed professionals are passionate people, and each one of us feels like we have a personal mission to make a difference for others. We are attracted to coaching because we love to work with people – but when it comes to “selling” our services, many of us get a bit uncomfortable.
And yet, we need to be paid for the value we provide. So what’s an up-and-coming coach to do?
It’s simple! Make a mental shift, from “selling your services” to “enrolling people” in the courage, confidence, commitment to getting what they want in life. (That feels better already, doesn’t it?)
Here’s the difference: Selling implies an attempt to influence someone to buy a product. Enrollment is building a relationship with a prospective client and inviting them to work with you. Put another way, it’s the difference between: will they hire me? and how can I serve them?
Here’s how to put this strategy into motion:
Use the complimentary session to focus on authentically connecting with your prospective clients, being of service to them, and building your relationship with them.
Support them in getting clear about what they really want.
Ask if they are ready to commit to breaking through and getting to the other side.
Make the call all about them. Forget about landing a new client; just stay focused on moving this person forward.
If they indicate they are ready to take action, simply ask the magic question: “Would you like me to be your coach?”
If they indicate they are ready to take action, simply ask the magic question: “Would you like to work with me to help you get these results?
Once they indicate their interest in your services, the financial commitment conversation follows naturally.
The beautiful part of this process is that it gives your prospect an opportunity to connect with you and experience what it’s like to have your full attention and support. In the end, people buy people – so the easiest way to sell your services is to give people an experience of talking with you.
Get Into Action!
Try this process on and see how it feels for you. Does this shift from selling to enrolling make it easier to engage with your prospects? Do you feel better about discussing a financial commitment after you’ve empowered your prospects to take action? Does it feel less like a sales job and more like a partnership? From time to time, you will encounter prospects that seem like an ideal client in every way – except one: their ability to pay your fees. Does that mean you shouldn’t work with them? Not necessarily.
Some people are worth offering a reduced rate. Here’s how to tell:
They are an ideal fit for your expertise.
They express a strong desire to be coached and take action.
They are willing to invest in coaching, but your standard fees put your services out of reach.
You may choose to offer a Scholarship Program (reduced pricing) to people who fit this profile. Here’s how to have that conversation.
“You know, Joseph, here at (company name), I have a Scholarship Program. What that means is, for people in your position, who really want to experience coaching but are currently unable to meet my standard fees, I’m willing to be somewhat flexible with my fees in the short term.
“Joseph, I’m curious, based on where you are right now, and still honoring me as a professional, what are you willing to invest in yourself through coaching at this time?”
He might say, “I really want to do your $200 once-a-month coaching program, but that would really be a stretch for me. I could really only afford $150.”
At this point, you as a professional have to decide what you’re willing to do for that fee and what would best serve the client. You might say, “I’m willing to offer you the twice-a-month coaching package for $150 instead of $300, because I really think two coaching sessions would serve you better. Would that work for you?”
It’s very important to state your standard fee before offering the discounted rate so the client understands the value and the offer.
It’s also important to declare a time frame around this offer.
“Joseph, this is a limited time offer. Scholarships are good for three months at a time (or whatever time frame you deem appropriate). At the end of three months, we will take another look at our agreements and see if it’s time to adjust the fees. Does that sound fair to you?”
A Scholarship Program is a great way to expand your clientele, develop your fan base, and contribute – however, I strongly suggest you limit your Scholarship Program to no more than three carefully chosen participants at a time.
A word to the wise: You will encounter prospects who could pay your fees but it would really be a stretch for them. Encourage those people to stretch… not because you want the business and the fees, but because that stretch will increase their commitment to the process. They will be highly motivated to get everything they can from your coaching – and you will be highly motivated to deliver the very best support possible. When there is a lot more at stake, everyone operates at a higher level.
